Design and Process
This production was the first show produced at Belmont with a predominantly African American cast written by an African American playwright. The story followed a family in 1950. The production style jumped between realistic and unrealistic when the main character would address the audience. I wanted the music choices to bring the audience right back to 1950 and be performed by African American artists. I worked with the actors on timing subway sound effects to fit into the lines. I worked hard to make sure that sound effects were localized in the space and even took apart an old radio and rigged it with a new speaker so that when the family was listening to the radio, it was realistic. A "movie projector" was localized behind the center audience and the upstairs neighbors' music was localized above the set. I payed close attention to levels and effects with the blackbox space to make the radio and localized sound effects sound as authentic as possible. I was also in charge of running choir mics through the board for headsets.
